Staff profile: Catelyn Richards, ANMF Northern Organiser

“I started my career as a graduate nurse in 2017 at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. I became involved with the ANMF as I always had a passion for quality and improvement/progressing the nursing profession forward.”

My advice to students is to completely immerse yourself in your studies and take every opportunity that is given to you. Put yourself out there to try and gain extra experience (go to workshops, events, study days, webinars etc.). Go for roles in childcare (if you want to be a paediatrics nurse), caring (for Aged Care) or AIN (if you are looking for experience to be an acute sector nurse). Refine your listening skills.”

“When you start out as a new nurse, remember to put self-care and wellness high on your priority list. Be loyal to your organisation, but firm in your personal care boundaries – you are the person who cares the MOST about your own wellness, so be the biggest advocate for taking care of yourself.”
