Aged Care Royal Commission: Hobart hearing 13 November 2019

An ABC news report covering the Hobart hearings from the Aged Care Royal Commission yesterday, the 13th of November, included testimony from two former managers of Glenara Lakes aged care facilities. During the hearing, both revealed they walked from their jobs because they were worried about residents’ health and safety, and highlighted the poor care worker to resident ratios. They detailed Southern Cross Care’s ‘break even’ strategy, which meant an eight hour reduction in care hours in the morning and six hours at night seen at the Yarrandoo facility. “I said if I have to cut one more hour I will go, and go I did ” stated one former manager during the hearing.

This submission is further supported by the audit conducted by the ANMF Tasmanian Branch over the weekend, which found a locked dementia unit with seventeen residents only had one care worker rostered overnight.
