Aged Care Sector COVID-19 Preparedness

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation Tasmanian Branch (ANMF) are representing members across the Aged Care Sector on the recently established Aged Care Emergency Operations Centre (ACEOC) Reference Group led by The Chief Nurse and Midwife, Francine Douce to develop an Aged Care preparedness strategy.

This reference group includes Stakeholders from the Aged Care Sector, Peak Aged Care Sector Representatives, Representatives from the Tasmanian Department of Health and also from the Commonwealth.

The key focus of this group is to work collaboratively to develop a clear preparedness strategy for the Aged Care Sector.

The ANMF has participated in a scenario-based sessions looking at how the Sector will respond in the event of a suspected COVID-19 case, an actual COVID-19 outbreak but also in the event of an outbreak.

Key priority areas raised by ANMF on behalf of members is the need for:

•    A Safe working environment with support for infection control and PPE
•    Access to additional staff and a surge workforce plan in the event of an outbreak
•    Industrial support for members in the event of being furloughed, contracting COVID-19 and process for allowing work across multiple sites

The ANMF understands the challenges for members working in the aged care sector and the concern regarding preparedness if the event of a COVID-19 and will continue to advocate on your behalf.

The ANMF Health Education and Research Centre will also be providing infection prevention and control training and education on behalf of the ACEOC to all aged care staff and ANMF would encourage members seeking advice from their employer as to when they will be provided access to the training.

The ANMF would also like to remind all members in the aged care sector, that in the event of an outbreak, that if you do contract COVID-19 you must lodge a worker’s compensation claim immediately.
