Tasmania passes voluntary assisted dying legislation

On Tuesday 23 March 2021, Tasmania became the third Australian State to legislate voluntary assisted dying. This was passed in the Legislative Council following amendments to original Bill in the House of Representatives. The passing of this Legislation is significant for Tasmania and follows Western Australia and Victoria.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation Tasmanian Branch (ANMF) acknowledge that the passing of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Legislation is likely to raise a number of questions for members. However, it is important to note that whilst the legislation has been passed, it will take a significant period of time for it to be implemented and made operational.

During this time, the ANMF will continue to advocate on behalf of members to ensure that the opportunity for consultation is afforded to those who wish to be involved and provide regular communications to all members. We also understand that some members do not support voluntary assisted dying and won’t want to be involved. The ANMF will continue to support these members in exercising contentious objection.
