Staff profile: Nicki Hood, ANMF Northern Organiser

With an opportunity to broaden her role representing the ANMF, Nicki is now an ANMF Northern Organiser based in Launceston after undertaking a similar position in the North West of Tasmania.

Nicki spent 20 years in retail management before a move to the Apple Isle presented her the opportunity to follow her long held dream to work in healthcare. In 2013, she completed her Certificate III in Aged Care and was also offered a position as carer following her Aged Care prac placement.

The beginning of 2014 saw her commence more studies, this time Certificate IV in Leisure and Health (as it was then known!). She was humbled when the Director of Nursing suggested that she consider nursing as a career. She had never even considered this as a possibility!

Fortuitously, shortly after this conversation, an information session was held to complete study as a nurse. Nicki described that ‘she didn’t hold out much hope’, as over 90 applicants had applied. Two months later a letter arrived to say she was chosen in a class of 23, setting off a whirl-wind 2 years of study!

Now 5 years on, Nicki is an Enrolled nurse working in an industry that she is passionate about. She is committed to assisting older Australians to live secure, protected, dignified lives at a time they are most vulnerable.
