TTP Graduate Impact

The ANMF circulated a survey last week to student members in the south who have been impacted by delays in Transition to Practice (TtP) positions, specifically where offer letters have been issued but placement location and / or start dates have not yet been confirmed. 

Following the release of this survey, the ANMF was contacted by students in other regions of the state who reported experiencing similar issues but were unable to access the survey. In response, the ANMF is now extending the survey statewide to ensure all affected graduates have the opportunity to provide feedback and access support from the ANMF. 

This ongoing uncertainty is causing understandable concern for graduates preparing to commence practice. If required, the ANMF may need to apply pressure to the Government to ensure that all offers made to TtP graduates are honoured and that graduates are appropriately supported. To assist us in accurately understanding the scale of this issue and the areas impacted, the ANMF is seeking responses from all TtP nurses who have received an offer letter to commence their graduate year with the Tasmanian Health Service (THS) in 2026. 

We need your help 

It is difficult for the ANMF to capture how many graduates are affected and where, without direct feedback. If you know a graduate who has been impacted and is not currently a member of the ANMF, please share this survey with them and encourage them to join.

Why your voice matters 

The ANMF exists to protect nurses, midwives, carers and students by standing together and taking collective action when it counts. When members share their experiences, it strengthens our ability to advocate, to hold governments and employers accountable, and to ensure promises made to graduates are honoured. 

Tasmanian State Service Work Health and Safety Best Practice Review

In September 2024, Work Health and Safety (WHS) Ministers requested that Safe Work Australia (SWA) conduct a Best Practice Review of the model WHS laws to ensure the highest protection and strengthen national harmonisation.
 
A Discussion Paper was released on Monday 1 September 2025, and consultation sessions were held around the country throughout September 2025. The ANMF Federal Branch asked the ANMF Tasmanian Branch to provide feedback on the Discussion Paper.
 
One key consideration of the review includes whether the framework of duties is effective at protecting workers and other persons against harm to their health, safety and welfare and can adapt to changes in work organisation and relationships.
 
In November 2025, the ANMF Tasmanian Branch fed back regarding its observations of its Tasmanian State Service (TSS) nurse members’ capacity to cope with radical Change Proposals issued by TSS (the employer) and how the employer is currently not regulated as far as psycho-social risks and hazards are concerned. 
 
The ANMF Tasmanian Branch has long observed that it is indecision that contributes to psychosocial trauma as this too causes significant impacts and harms.  For example, in the case of the employer developing benchmarking where a decision regarding safe staffing has not been made for years, there will be considerable negative impacts to nurses. These impacts are not only physical, but also psychological, due to nurses facing multiple insults that they are not meeting professional standards during this interim period, when they are not working in safe staffing conditions in the first place.
 
The ANMF Tasmanian Branch will pass on WHS concerns to the ANMF Federal Branch in the future.
