The Tasmanian Branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) has accepted the Government offer for a new Nurses and Midwives agreement with over 80% of voting members accepting the proposed Nurses and Midwives Public Sector Agreement Offer.

This landmark agreement marks a significant milestone in recognising the dedication and hard work of Tasmanian Nurses and Midwives and will play a pivotal role in enhancing recruitment and retention efforts within the profession.

The centerpiece of this historic agreement is a competitive wage offer, the best in over 10 years, that will see Tasmanian Nurses and Midwives receive wages in line with or even above the national average, effective on or after Friday 1 December of this year. The ANMF views this offer as an essential step towards bringing Tasmanian healthcare professionals on par with their interstate counterparts and making the state more competitive in terms of recruitment and retention.

ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary, Emily Shepherd, stated, “This offer is the recognition that hardworking Tasmanian Nurses and Midwives deserve – to be paid in line with their interstate counterparts and, at long last, to be competitive with other states and territories when it comes to recruitment and retention.”

The ANMF is working diligently to ensure a swift drafting and registration process for the agreement to ensure that cost of living payments can begin to flow to members before Friday 1 December 2023. This swift action underscores the ANMF’s commitment to its members’ well-being and cost of living pressures.

In addition to the significant wage improvements, the agreement also outlines several commitments that will further improve the working conditions and environment for nurses and midwives in Tasmania. This includes working on a new ratio staffing model, addressing the multi-disciplinary allowance inconsistencies, and collaborating with the department to create a safer healthcare environment. ‘The ANMF is pleased to have delivered on the vast majority of members key log of claim items at a time when it is much needed.’

The ANMF is eager to start implementing these commitments, using the agreement as a foundation for enhancing the nursing and midwifery workforce and the healthcare environment in Tasmania. This will pave the way for a brighter future for the professions, with a strong focus on retention, recruitment, and safety.
