ANMF Returns to Industrial Commission Over Ongoing Public Sector Staffing Crisis

22 April 2025

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (Tasmanian Branch) will return to the Tasmanian Industrial Commission (TIC) on Wednesday 23 April 2025, to continue proceedings in the ongoing Public Sector Statewide Staffing Dispute.

At this conference, the ANMF expects the Department of Health to provide the long-awaited statewide nursing vacancy data, an update on the bulk recruitment process, and a formal response to the ANMF’s call for a Market Allowance to apply to hard-to-fill roles across the state’s public health system.

ANMF Tasmanian Branch Acting-Secretary Phoebe Mansell said that despite ongoing efforts to engage constructively with the Department, frontline members are continuing to report unsafe staffing levels across wards and units on a daily basis.

“Nurses, midwives and assistants in nursing are fatigued, burnt out, and desperate for resources. Many are working under intolerable pressure due to consistent short staffing and escalating patient demand,” Ms Mansell said.

“We are urging the Government to recognise the seriousness of this crisis and take real action to support the workforce – starting with a commitment to staff to the agreed minimum, greater transparency, a meaningful recruitment strategy, and immediate investment in retention through market allowances.

“Safe hospitals require safe staffing. It’s time for the Government to invest in nurses, midwives and assistants in nursing.”

The ANMF continues to advocate for a safe, sustainable public health system where staff are supported, and patients receive the care they deserve.
