NEW SUPPORT PAYMENTS FOR TASMANIAN NURSING AND MIDWIFERY STUDENTS

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) Tasmanian Branch has welcomed the announcement by the Albanese Government of new support payments for student nurses and midwives undergoing clinical placement training.

The ‘Commonwealth Prac Payment’ initiative will provide eligible undergraduate nursing and midwifery students, as well as diploma of nursing students, with a weekly payment of $319.50 during their mandatory clinical and professional training periods.

ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary, Emily Shepherd highlighted the significance of these payments in acknowledging the financial and social challenges faced by student nurses and midwives throughout their studies and clinical placements. She emphasised the substantial commitment required by students, including a minimum of 800 hours in placements for those aspiring to become registered nurses.

“The ANMF has consistently campaigned for paid support for students undertaking mandatory clinical placements, recognising the financial strain and sacrifices they endure,” stated Emily Shepherd. “The introduction of these payments marks a significant victory for all Tasmanian student nurses and midwives.”

“The financial burdens encountered by students are substantial, ranging from loss of income from paid work to additional expenses such as transportation, accommodation, childcare, uniforms, and essential training materials. These challenges, compounded by escalating living costs, have contributed to a concerning trend of student attrition.”

“This new payment scheme will alleviate financial pressures and provide crucial support to students navigating their clinical placements, ultimately encouraging greater retention and participation in the nursing and midwifery workforce. By addressing these financial barriers, we can foster a more resilient and robust future workforce.”

The means-tested payment will commence from Tuesday 1 July 2025 to supplement any existing income support received by students, offering a lifeline to those striving to complete their studies amidst financial constraints.

ANMF Tasmania extends its gratitude to the Albanese Government for prioritising the welfare of nursing and midwifery students and looks forward to further collaborations aimed at building a stronger healthcare future for Tasmania.
