ANMF Aged Care Conference Focusing on Reform to Reality: Supporting Workers, Delivering Care

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation Tasmanian Branch (ANMF), in conjunction with the Health Education and Research Centre, today will present the annual Aged Care Conference.
ANMF Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd said the conference supports Aged Care Nurses and Care Workers working where care and treatment are delivered to elderly vulnerable Tasmanians. This includes residential aged care in the community and also across acute settings.
The topics covered at the conference will be varied and will include clinical best practice updates on care of respiratory conditions in the elderly to the psychosocial hazards in the workplace that are created by understaffing and what can be done to reduce this risk.
“The conference really highlights the complexity of working with elderly and vulnerable Tasmanians,” Ms Shepherd said.
“Not only do nurses and care workers need to be across best practice in clinical care delivery of respiratory conditions, but they also need a varied toolbox in ways of being able to communicate effectively with those they are delivering care and treatment to, many of whom are or will be affected by dementia.”
Ms Shepherd said the ANMF will also celebrate those who exhibit excellence in aged care and support not only in the clinical environment but the nursing team and the community.
“The three award recipients are peer-nominated and selected from a vast amount of nominees.”
“The Aged Care Award recipients are always so humble. While they don’t expect to be recognised, it is always a thrill to recognise them as so often in the Aged Care Sector those who are working incredibly hard and delivering high-quality care are not celebrated and they really should be more often.”
Ms Shepherd said the conference will also include opportunities for attendees to ensure they are exercising self-care with presentations from the Nurses and Midwives Health Program of Australia, which provides peer counselling and support to nurses and midwives across Australia.
“Attendees will also be given the opportunity to brainstorm further solutions for the aged care sector that the ANMF can advocate for in the future to continue to improve aged care for Australians.”
