Public Sector Updates – North

Launceston General Hospital (LGH)

Ward 4D/NCCU

The Tasmanian Health Service (THS) North has released the Phase 2 Change Proposal for Ward 4D and NCCU, which outlines plans to establish a dedicated Cardiology Ward at the LGH.

While this change aims to enhance cardiovascular care and reduce pressure on hospital beds and the Emergency Department (ED), it also comes with significant impacts on staffing, workloads, and bed capacity, particularly for general medical patients.

Key Concerns:

  • Loss of six (6) general medical beds to accommodate the new cardiology unit.
  • Increased risk of bed block in the ED as displaced medical patients struggle to find beds.
  • Uncertainty around staffing allocations, workloads, and training needs.
  • Lost capacity until the LGH Masterplan expansion (2028-2029) is completed.

Updates are correct as of 6 March 2025.
